Hyundai and Kia have introduced a pioneering in-vehicle sanitation solution that utilizes a plasma lamp to disinfect the interior and eliminate cabin odors while the car is fully occupied. Known as "Plasma Care UVC," this technology leverages Far-ultraviolet light at a wavelength spanning 200 to 230 nanometers. This specific range effectively neutralizes microorganisms and unwanted scents without being absorbed by human skin.
Standard UV disinfection methods typically operate at wavelengths between 255 and 280 nanometers, which can pose health risks to humans. In contrast, the shorter wavelengths of Far-ultraviolet light are considered safe for occupancy. This technology is already a standard sanitation method used in busy public environments like medical facilities and educational institutions. While integrating this into an automotive platform, engineers had to ensure it could withstand the rigors of the road.
To implement this safety-focused technology, the plasma-based apparatus had to be significantly scaled down to operate safely within the confined space of a passenger car. Furthermore, the hardware required resilience to remain functional despite extreme temperature shifts and road turbulence. To maintain these safety margins, the system includes an "Optical Safety Control" mechanism that strictly confines the Far-ultraviolet emissions to the 200-230 nm window.
The efficacy of Plasma Care UVC has been demonstrated in controlled environments. Evaluation by the Korea Testing Laboratory confirmed that in an 8-cubic-meter area, the system successfully eliminated 96.8 percent of airborne viral particles in just 30 minutes. While currently in the advanced research and development stage, this technology represents a significant leap forward for automotive cabin hygiene and passenger wellness.
Although Plasma Care UVC is still being refined for future production models, the commitment to innovation remains clear. This technology aims to complement modern connectivity features like Bluetooth® and Apple CarPlay® by providing a cleaner, safer environment for every journey.
