LMR Battery Cell Technology
The cost of parts and the overall range are two of the biggest complaints people have about electric vehicles. However, a new fuel cell developed by GM could help solve both issues in the near future.
The cost of parts and the overall range are two of the biggest complaints people have about electric vehicles. However, a new fuel cell developed by GM could help solve both issues in the near future.
The LMR Fuel Cell
The LMR fuel cell battery will be mostly manganese, which is cheaper to produce and easier to obtain. Therefore, it should result in electric vehicles that cost less to make. Furthermore, the new battery will be lighter and smaller than a typical fuel cell. This means the cars will be more efficient than those on the market today.
How Far Can You Go on One Charge?
GM expects that you'll be able to get up to 400 miles per charge, which is equivalent to what you get from a full tank of gas on most traditional vehicles. Depending on the type of vehicle you have, you may be able to get even more from each charge thanks to regenerative technology. Essentially, energy used while braking is captured and recycled through the battery.
When Will the New Battery Be Available?
The new battery is expected to be installed in vehicles as soon as 2027. This may be a key consideration for those who are thinking about buying a new car in the future or those who are opting to go from a traditional powertrain to a hybrid or electric one.
