Smartphones, computers, tablets, and all of their embedded "smart" devices already receive over-the-air (OTA) updates routinely. However, modern vehicles, which have become increasingly reliant on software for navigation, driving assistance, and entertainment, are also subject to OTA updates.
For the most part, OTA updates on vehicles are similar to the updates that get downloaded to your other devices. Your vehicle receives updates via a wireless internet connection, which is what makes them "over the air." These updates are applied automatically and do everything from increasing security for your devices to enabling new features. There are some differences, though. For one, vehicles have very specific safety and reliability requirements, and any software updates they receive need to conform to those specifications. That can make it difficult for programmers and manufacturers to roll out any significant software changes and updates. There's also the fact that many of the vehicles on the road, such as smartphones and laptops, were never meant to be updated; OTA updates are mainly for newer vehicles that are currently hitting the market.
Still, that doesn't change the fact that we are currently in a new era when it comes to vehicle technology. Drivers are relying on features such as driver assistance and navigation more than ever, especially those driving modern EVs and hybrid vehicles. It's only a matter of time before nearly all vehicles regularly receive updates, just like an iPhone or Android phone.
