A lot has changed since MotorTrend's first Car of the Year award. But even in the early days of MotorTrend, the editorial team was looking ahead. They had an eye on the future of the automotive industry.
Over the years, the award has gone to some of the most iconic cars in history. The list includes the Porsche 911, the Ford Mustang, and the Chevrolet Corvette. And in more recent years, the award has gone to electric cars like the Tesla Model S and the Audi e-Tron.
The Prestigious 2023 Motortrend Car of the Year Award
The judging for the 2023 Car of the Year (COTY) competition says this year is shaping up to be one of the most hotly contested competitions yet. Nine judges, including Chris Theodore, the guest judge, drove the 22 vehicles in California at the Hyundai's Mojave Proving Ground. What they were there to evaluate was each car:
- Interior
- Handling
- Powertrain
- Safety systems
- Technology
- Design
The judges were unanimous in their praise for the Hyundai Veloster N, which scored highly in all categories. The Porsche Panamera, Genesis G80, and Acura Integra also received high marks. At the same time, the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 was singled out for its impressive powertrains.
The judges all filed out of the small room, each of them looking pleased with the decision they had just made. It hadn't been an easy choice, but in the end, they had all agreed that the winner was the most deserving vehicle.
After all the work they had put in, it is great to see their efforts rewarded. They'll be back at it for the Truck and Performance Vehicle of the Year award events.
